Background:
During a
Church Planning Meeting and a week later at the Church Charge Conference,
Wesley UMC named MISSION as one of its top goals for the church. A mission team
from Wesley UMC traveled to Marion, Virginia in the Appalachian foothills of
Southwest Virginia to work in mission with Project Crossroads. Southwest
Virginia (most particularly Smythe County) was once an industrial center. In
the last 10-15 years, however, all but one of the major industries once based
in this region of Virginia have moved out of the area. Left behind is a high
unemployment rate and poverty level. Project Crossroads works with the
disinherited of this area to improve poor housing situations. For more
