Membership is open to any woman who indicates her desire to belong and to participate in the global mission of the church through the United Methodist Women.
Women Called to Ministry was conceived and created by the General Commission on the Status and Role of Women (GCSRW) as a follow-up to the 50th anniversary celebration for full clergy rights for women in the Methodist tradition. Co-sponsored by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, the six-part, downloadable study traces the biblical and historical roots of women spreading the word of God, from the Old Testament to the contemporary Christian church. The Commission invites laity and clergy in congregations to explore in more depth the impact that women preachers have had on the historic and modern Christian church. The resource is designed for adult Sunday school or bible study (and includes a student booklet and leaders guide). It is available free for local churches in a pdf format at www.gcsrw.org.

The organization of the United Methodist Women (UMW) has been in mission for about 140 years. Around the world, women and children have been given help and hope by the efforts of women dedicated to serving God and serving others. The early Womens Missionary Societies became the Womens Society of Christian Service (WSCS) and then became our present UMW but the purpose was always to reach out to those whose lives were restricted by disease, ignorance, poverty, natural and political disasters and other negative conditions. This was done through educational and health programs, job training, after-school programs, and many more supportive endeavors. Early in the 50 + year history of Wesley Church, the WSCS was organized with a large general membership and a number of circles. At present, there is only one circle, Trinity, which meets on the fourth Monday of most months at 7:00 p.m. in the parlor. There is a Bible-related study, time for fellowship, and twice-yearly dining out at local restaurants. The UMW at Wesley has supported the refurbishing of the parlor and nursery. We also have purchased equipment for the kitchen. Our fundraising event is an International Dinner, in which the whole church participates. Locally, we support United Community Ministries with money, as well as food for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals and Christmas gifts. Once a month, we support Route One Corridor Kitchens program of providing lunch for homeless people with a meal. We have a socks- and- underwear drive for local schools during the winter months; collect kits of various kinds for the United Methodist Committee on Relief in the spring; prepare and serve desserts for the Peach Festival in August. In all of these efforts, the UMW is greatly supported by the generous help of the whole church. The UMW, with opportunities for fellowship, spiritual growth, and service, is open to all women of the church. We would like to restart a circle that would meet in the daytime, and we would like to form a circle that would focus on a service project (tutoring in a school, visiting shut-ins, or mentoring single mothers, for example). If interested, please contact Gayle Besemer or Nora Rudd. |
The UMW extend an invitation to all women of the Wesley congregation to be a part of a fellowship which offers spiritual growth and opportunities of service:
Trinity Circle led by Gayle Besemer meets the fourth Monday at 7:00 p.m. in the Parlor. The group chose a book called Adventures in Prayer for this year's (2008) study. All women of the church are welcome.
Collecting Labels
Helping a
Community
For a number of years, our congregation has collected labels from Campbell's soups and other products which we have sent to The Bethlehem Center in Richmond. It is a mission agency in an impoverished area which provides child day care, after school care, tutoring, computer classes, teen recreation and senior services. Three years ago, enough labels were given for the Center to get a van. Now, the labels go towards equipment. The Center has also asked for help with child care scholarships and salary support for staff. The General Board of Global Ministries made grants of $84,000 to update the kitchen, bathrooms, and other needs of the Center's building.
It is time to find all of those Campbells product labels that you have been saving.! Please drop them in the basket in the church foyer. The labels will be sent to the Henry Folk Service Center in Rocky Mount, VA The Henry Fork Service Center is a multi-purpose mission outreach of the Danville District of the United Methodist Church. Its mission is "making God's love visible" in the Henry Fork Community: * by acting as a positive Christian presence * by being a place where children, youth and adults can come to spend creative time. * by offering a helping hand and listening ear to those with problems * by exemplifying Christ as Lord and Savior to all persons in its caring ministry
