United Methodist Men Celebrate 100 Years

Early Years
The first Methodist Brotherhoods were created in 1908 in Baltimore where the General Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church (MEC) authorized Methodist Brotherhoods.

In 1909 the Otterbein Brotherhood of the Church is organized in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. In 1924 the General Conference of the MEC authorized Wesley Brotherhoods. Then in 1931 the Albright Brotherhood of the Evangelical Church organizes.

In 1939 The three branches of Methodism are merged into The Methodist Church.

In 1940 the General Conference established a General Board of Lay Activities with a Department of Methodist Men.

In 1942 the name Methodist Men is adopted and the first charters are issued.


United Methodist era
The Methodist Church and The Evangelical Unified Bretheren Church unify into the United Methodist Church (UMC) in 1968 and the men's ministry is combined into United Methodist Men (UMM).

The United Methodist Men's Foundation was chartered in 1981 and in 1987 the men's section of the Board of Discipleship is raised to division status.

In 1992 the first National Conference on Black Men in Crisis is held at the board.

In 1996 the General Conference created the Commission on United Methodist Men.

In 2005 the commission signed a covenant with Big Brothers/Big Sisters, also the UMC became the second largest charter organization of the Boy Scouts of America.

In 2006 the commission moved into new offices in Nashville and the Rev. David Adams was elected top staff executive of the commission.
